SharePoint 2010 is a business collaborative platform for the enterprise and the web.
Overview:-
SharePoint is a .net based technology that can be used to create dynamic and secure websites using predefined site templates. These sites allow information to be stored, shared, searched and presented in a secured manner. SharePoint is set of products and technologies.
SharePoint Products include:
- SharePoint Foundation 2010 (Free)
- SharePoint Server 2010 (Licensed) - (SharePoint Foundation + Extra Features)
- SharePoint Designer 2010 (Free)
Web Application:-
A SharePoint web application is an IIS website extended by SharePoint and is associated with an SQL Server content database. It can contain up to 50000 site collections.
Site Collection:-
A Site Collection is a group of related websites with a top level site that may contain one or more sub sites and so on.
Note:- User can create a multiple site collections inside a web application based on the requirement instead of creating a new web application because each web application utilizes 500MB memory.
Pages in the SharePoint are of two types.

Application pages are shared by all sites they are generally used to administer a SharePoint site.
